Keukenhof

A Netherlands Tulip Guide

The Netherlands in spring is a magical place to be!

Flying into Schipol airport make sure you have a window seat to marvel over the fields and fields of tulips in bloom. Having been to the Netherlands before, we missed that small window of opportunity to see the tulips. Here are some of the best places to see tulips.

Keukenhof Tulip Garden

Getting to Keukenhof we took the train back to Schipol Airport, from there you can take a bus to Keukenhof. The best idea would be to pre-purchase your tickets. Not only will this save you a few euro’s, but you will also skip the ticket line to head straight for the entrance.
The car park outside the venue was filled with hundreds or cars, busses and campers, but the venue is so large that you don’t feel overwhelmed by tourists.
Keukenhof was completely not what we expected! We thought we would just see fields of flowers which you could meander through and have a picnic somewhere. Well, let me tell you that is was like entering “The Secret Garden”. Perfectly manicured beds of perfectly bloomed tulips all arranged in color pallets to complement each other. Tree canopied gardens with rivers, ponds and lush green lawns. Children playing, people eating and laughing, some even catching an afternoon nap, others lounging like lizards in the sun.
We were with friends and packed our rucksacks with cheeses, biscuits, cold cuts and Champaign. You are allowed to take these items in, so find a nice little private spot and enjoy a romantic picnic.
If you don’t feel like traveling with a bag on your back there is a restaurant on the premises and also kiosks selling traditional food and drink.

Tulip Fields in the Bollenstreek Region

The Bollenstreek, or “Bulb Region,” is the heart of tulip farming in the Netherlands.
This area, stretching from Haarlem to Leiden, is home to vast fields of tulips in every imaginable color. The best way to explore the Bollenstreek is by bicycle. Many cycling routes wind through the fields, offering stunning views and photo opportunities. The Tulip Route is particularly popular and takes visitors through some of the most vibrant fields

Noordoostpolder

Located in the province of Flevoland, Noordoostpolder boasts some of the largest tulip fields in the country. The annual Tulip Festival in this region highlights the beauty of the blooms with guided tours, scenic walking routes, and cultural activities. It’s less crowded than other areas, making it ideal for those looking for a more tranquil tulip experience.

Amsterdam’s Tulip Festival

For those visiting Amsterdam durning the blossom period, the city’s Tulip Festival offers a chance to see tulips without venturing far. Held throughout April, the festival aims to plant one tulip for every resident of Amsterdam. Tulip displays can be found in parks, public squares, and even on houseboats. Highlights include the floating Flower Market (Bloemenmarkt) and the Tulip Museum. Here I would advise purchasing the Tulip Festival Card which will get you entry into some of the top tulip viewing locations.

Schagerbrug

A hidden gem for tulip enthusiasts, Schagerbrug is a small village in the North Holland province. The surrounding fields are less frequented by tourists, offering a peaceful setting to enjoy the blooms. This area is perfect for photographers and nature lovers seeking a serene escape.

Flower Parade (Bloemencorso Bollenstreek)

For a unique tulip experience, don’t miss the annual Flower Parade. This spectacular event features floats adorned with thousands of tulips and other spring flowers.
The parade travels a 42-kilometer route from Noordwijk to Haarlem, drawing thousands of visitors each year. The vibrant displays and festive atmosphere make it an unforgettable celebration of Dutch flower culture.
