Madeira Island Portugal

Madeira Island – Top Attractions & Tips

If you’re looking for a breathtaking island getaway, Madeira Island should be at the top of your list.

This Portuguese gem in the Atlantic Ocean is famous for its dramatic landscapes, stunning coastline, delicious food, and warm hospitality. On a recent cross Atlantic cruise, we stopped at Madeira Island for two days (not our first time there), and let me tell you it was absolutely magical. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

Top Attractions on the Madeira Island

Funchal - The Heart of Madeira

Funchal, the capital, is a fantastic place to start exploring. Wander through the charming old town. Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmer’s Market) to check out exotic fruits, flowers, local souvenirs and fresh seafood. I did however find the prices double that of anywhere else on Maderia Island, but enjoyed the experience none the less and do your shopping elsewhere.
Take a ride on the famous Monte Cable Car for incredible views over the city. Once at the top, you can explore the beautiful Monte Palace Tropical Garden or the Madeira Botanical Garden, both home to incredible plant species from around the world.
For an adrenaline rush, don’t miss a thrilling toboggan ride down the steep streets, yes, you read that right! A traditional wooden sled ride down a road, guided by men in straw hats, makes for an unforgettable experience.

Madeira Island Doors

The Doors of Rua de Santa Maria

One of the most unique experiences in Funchal is strolling down Rua de Santa Maria, also known as the Street of Doors. This historic street is lined with colorful, artistically painted doors, each telling a different story. It’s a fantastic spot for photos, street art lovers, and finding cozy little cafés and restaurants.

Pico do Arieiro & Pico Ruivo - Epic Hiking Spots

If you love hiking, the trail between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo (Madeira’s highest peak) is an absolute must. The rugged mountain scenery, misty valleys, and breathtaking sunrise views make it one of the best hikes in the world.

Porto Moniz Natural Pools

Fancy a swim? The natural volcanic pools in Porto Moniz are the perfect place to relax and soak up the scenery. The crystal-clear water is refreshing, and the surrounding lava rocks create a unique landscape.

Levada Walks

Madeira is famous for its levadas—narrow irrigation channels that double as incredible hiking trails. My personal favorite was Levada do Caldeirão Verde, where you’ll walk through lush forests, tunnels, and waterfalls.

Cabo Girão - One of the World’s Highest Cliffs

If you’re not afraid of heights, head to Cabo Girão, one of the tallest sea cliffs in Europe. There’s a glass-floored skywalk that lets you look straight down to the ocean—pretty thrilling!

Santana’s Traditional Houses

For a glimpse of Madeira’s traditional way of life, visit Santana, where you’ll find charming triangular thatched houses. It’s a great spot for photos and learning about local culture.

Did You Know?

Madeira Island is the birthplace of the famous football star Cristiano Ronaldo. He still owns a house on the marina and visits his mother often. Ronaldo is treated like a god by the locals, not only for his football status, but also because of considerable financial contributions to the island during the COVID pandemic. The “CR7” museum was erected in his honor and can be found on the marina promenade.

Best Time to Visit Madeira Island

Madeira is great to visit year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to do:
Spring (March-May): Perfect for hiking and seeing Madeira in full bloom.
Summer (June-August): Great for beach lovers and outdoor activities.
Autumn (September-November): Fewer crowds, warm weather, and amazing wine festivals.
Winter (December-February): Mild temperatures and a spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Funchal.

What to Eat & Drink on Madeira Island

Food Must-Try:

  • Espetada – Grilled beef skewers seasoned with garlic and bay leaves.
  • Bolo do Caco – A traditional bread, often served warm with garlic butter.
  • Lapas – Grilled limpets with butter, garlic, and lemon—so tasty!
  • Black Scabbard Fish (Espada com Banana) – A strange but delicious combo of deep-sea fish and banana.
  • Passion fruit mousse – Light, fresh, and super flavourful!

Drinks to Try:

  • Poncha – Madeira’s famous cocktail made with rum, honey, and orange juice—strong but so good. There are three flavours to try, traditional (orange), lemon (quiet tart) and passion fruit (my favourite). Try them straight or over ice, but just be careful, they pack a punch!
  • Madeira Wine – A sweet, fortified wine that’s been aged to perfection. The best place to do a tasting would be at H.M Borges Wine Lodge for an interactive tasting and tour.
  • Nikita – A refreshing drink made with beer, ice cream, and pineapple.

How to Get to Madeira from Lisbon

Getting to Madeira from Lisbon is super easy and cheap. There are daily direct flights from Lisbon Airport (LIS) to Madeira Airport (FNC), and the flight takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Once you arrive, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or use buses to explore the island.

Final Tips for Visiting Madeira Island

  • Rent a car if you want to explore beyond Funchal—the best spots are spread out.
  • Be prepared for varying weather, especially in the mountains—layers are your best friend.
  • Try Poncha, but pace yourself—it’s stronger than it seems!
  • Don’t forget your hiking shoes—Madeira is a hiker’s paradise.

If you love nature, adventure, great food, and friendly people, Madeira is the perfect destination. I left this island completely in awe and can’t wait to return.
